Foro Sao Paulo Demands the Liberation of Alex Saab

Foro de Sao Paulo exige liberación de Alex Saab

Members of the XXVI São Paulo Forum (June 29-July 2) ratified their rejection of the illegal detention of the Venezuelan Special Envoy to Iran, Alex Saab, on the third anniversary of his arbitrary arrest in Cape Verde and subsequent transfer to the United States.

After four years without sessions as a result of the pandemic and its consequences, the in person meeting returned to Brasilia, where about 170 representatives from 23 countries, and about 80 guests from international parties and more than 300 national delegates, expressed their solidarity with the Venezuelan diplomat.

The political and social parties and movements expressed in the resolution approved within the framework of the Meeting held from June 29 to July 2, 2023, their condemnations included in the declarations of October 19, 2021 and November 19, 2022 on the violation of international law with the detention of Saab.

International agreements

For her part, human rights activist Camilla Fabri, thanked the São Paulo Forum for defending international agreements and calling for the release of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab.

Through her Twitter account, Fabri stated that they continue “defending international agreements. Thank you São Paulo Forum, organizations, parties, social fighters, together we will win”.

The Forum refuted the illegal decision of the Court of the Southern District of Florida in the United States, issued last December 23, 2022, where the diplomatic immunity of the Venezuelan Special Envoy is disregarded, on the basis of the disregard of the constitutional government of Venezuela.

“This flagrantly violates International Law and specifically the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Said decision ratifies that Alex Saab’s case is based on strictly political reasons and is framed within the aggression of the U.S. government against Venezuela,” the communiqué refers.

“The progressive, popular and left-wing forces, from the city of Brasilia, Brazil, make a new call to the U.S. authorities for the immediate release and repatriation of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab, as a way of vindicating respect for the laws and diplomatic conventions,” the group added.

The São Paulo Forum seeks to generate a set of concrete actions to deepen the rights and demands of the peoples of the world, in addition to confronting imperialism.
