Hero of Cuba René González: Alex Saab defended the lives of Venezuelans

“What law did Alex Saab violate to be able to defend the lives of Venezuelans? To defend the peace, tranquility and peace of a Nation that was trying to survive and overcome the sanctions? The irrationality of the conduct of the United States (USA) is in full view of everyone”, affirmed René González , one of the Five Cuban Heroes, during his intervention before the National Assembly of Venezuela (AN).

This Thursday, the Venezuelan Parliament approved by a qualified majority an agreement to support the immediate release of Venezuelan diplomat Alex Saab, three years after his arbitrary and illegal detention when he was fulfilling a humanitarian mission as Venezuela’s Special Envoy to Iran.

“In the case of Alex Saab, all international laws were violated; Alex Saab cannot be charged because he had not set foot on US territory, he was taken to the US by force and under this chain of violations of due process it is intended to subject him to the same privations that we were subjected to for the crime of defending life of Venezuelans,” emphasized González.

In this sense, González expressed his hope that “it will be much easier to convince the world that Alex Saab has to be released now,” he said.

Inhuman conditions

González, who served 13 of 15 years of his sentence in the United States for defending Cuban sovereignty from terrorist attacks, recalled the conditions of his imprisonment in the same prison where Alex Saab is being held today: “a cold, gray monolithic building, where Low temperatures predominate.

The first of the Five Cuban Heroes to be released, recounted that “from that cell I saw the steps of my little daughter, that’s how I saw my daughter walk,” and lamented that “Alex Saab’s family doesn’t even have that opportunity ”.

“We have to ensure that he (Alex Saab) does not go through what we went through, we cannot allow him to go to trial, and we ask that all people join the campaign for his release. I ask that we mobilize in each of our countries, the largest number of people sign that declaration, request an audience at the consulates and deliver it there. Much remains to be done, but the main thing has been done; we have to bring it and have it here now,” González urged.

The reading of the agreement was in charge of the deputy Ilenia Medina (Patria Para Todos), who stressed that the kidnapping of Alex Saab is unprecedented in the history of international law, stating that the fight for his release “has to be a collective fight ”.

“When the US kidnaps our hero with the complicity of Cape Verde to guarantee medicines, they are ignoring all those international regulations that began since World War II,” Medina said.

“We feel on our shoulders the burden of defending the sovereignty of our people, when they violate one, they violate all diplomats. We have to mobilize about what this crime against humanity means,” concluded the legislator.
