The Corporate Media and the US Instigated War in Ukraine
We have seen how the US corporate media lies in relation to Latin America. A narco-trafficking, death squad connected government in Colombia is represented as a democracy, Juan Guaido is portrayed as the democratic president of Venezuela, the murders of Chavista Venezuelans and Nicaraguan Sandinistas in 2017-2018 are portrayed not as the work of US funded right wing groups, but the work of the Nicaraguan and Venezuelan governments. The US blockade of food and medicines to Cubans and Venezuelans are represented as actions to defend the human rights of these people.
The same US government and corporate media propaganda operates against Russia today, only on an intensified and overwhelming scale. Whether or not we oppose or support, or are conflicted over the Russian intervention in Ukraine, it is important to not to underestimate the immense propaganda power and disinformation system of the US rulers.
Journalists have a history of working with the CIA. Carl Bernstein wrote in CIA and the Media (1977) that more than 400 journalists were connected to the CIA. This CIA-media collaboration had the consent of the managements of America’s leading news organizations. They colluded to hide this from the public. These news organizations, which published CIA fake news stories, included CBS, Time, New York Times, ABC, NBC, Associated Press, Reuters, Newsweek, United Press International, Miami Herald, Saturday Evening Post and New York Herald Tribune.
CIA use of the corporate media escalated with Obama signing NDAA 2017, which lifted restrictions on the CIA and other national security state agencies to feed fake news to the US population.
The NDAA established “an executive branch interagency committee to counter active measures by the Russian Federation to exert covert influence over peoples and governments…through front groups, covert broadcasting, media manipulation, disinformation or forgeries, funding agents of influence, incitement, offensive counterintelligence, assassinations, or terrorist acts.”
The intent of the law, according to one of its chief authors, Senator Portman, is to “improve the ability of the United States to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation from our enemies by establishing an interagency center housed at the State Department to coordinate and synchronize counter-propaganda efforts throughout the U.S. government. To support these efforts, the bill also creates a grant program for NGOs, think tanks, civil society and other experts outside government.”
NGOs and civil society can now receive grants to paint voices of the anti-war movement as spreaders of Russian “disinformation.” This may shed light on the origin of the story that those opposed to the regime change operation on Syria are “Putinists” and “Assadists” and similar smears directed against opponents of US wars today.
Below we give just a sampling of articles that do not appear in the corporate press or have exposed corporate media fake news concerning the US-instigated war in Ukraine.
