Venezuela & ALBA News 1.5.2026: Latest Updates on US Attack on the Bolivarian Revolution; Days of Anti-War Actions for Venezuela

Chris Gilbert: Report from Caracas: The US Kidnaps President Nicolás Maduro, but Venezuela Fights Back and Maintains Its Revolution The US bombed Venezuela from approximately 2:00 to 2:45 a.m. on January 3. At least seven sites in the greater Caracas area were affected, as well as locations elsewhere. Both military personnel and civilians were killed, including children. Infrastructure damage is significant. In the course of the attack, President Maduro was kidnapped and taken to New York. This happened despite fierce resistance from his security team. The entire inner circle stood their ground and died fighting. US forces also abducted President Maduro’s wife, Cilia Flores. There have been no demonstrations on the part of the opposition. Instead, people have mobilized in defense of the government, the President, and the revolution.

Orinoco Tribune: Venezuela’s Revolution Remains Intact—International and Domestic Demonstrations Demand Return of Abducted President Thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets nationwide to demand the return of their president. Simultaneously, all levels of the state issued pronouncements in support of the Constitutional order and respect for the nation’s institutions. Governors and mayors from the majority of the country recorded and spread videos online reaffirming their allegiance to President Maduro and Constitutional legality; they were joined in these efforts by the people and leaders of the military, including General Vladimir Padrino López, Strategic Operations Commander of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB) and Minister of Defence. Meanwhile, the Public Ministry, National Assembly, and Supreme Court of Justice passed resolutions or issued statements in the same vein.

Two Wounded Venezuelan Soldiers Speak

International Trade Union Confederation and Trade Union Confederation of the Americas strongly condemn the US military aggression and violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty  The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and the Trade Union Confederation of the Americas (TUCA) express their absolute and unequivocal rejection of the military operation carried out in today by the government of the United States of America on the territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Rafael Freire, TUCA General Secretary, “We defend Venezuela and all of Latin America as a territory of peace. We do not accept invasion and violence against our peoples and territories. The trade union movement, as always, is on the front line of defending sovereignty and self-determination, democracy and human rights.”

Statement of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, January 3, 2026 The objective of this attack is none other than the seizure of Venezuela’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and mineral wealth, through an attempt to forcibly undermine the Nation’s political independence. They will not succeed. After more than two hundred years of independence, the people and their legitimate Government remain steadfast in the defense of sovereignty and the inalienable right to determine their own destiny. The attempt to impose a colonial war in order to destroy the republican form of government and force a so-called “regime change,” in alliance with the fascist oligarchy, will fail, just as all previous attempts have failed.

Granma: Against US government aggression towards Cuba, more solidarity is needed The solidarity movement with Cuba in the United States faces a historic emergency today amid the unprecedented escalation of aggression by the current administration of Donald Trump toward the Caribbean nation. Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the organization CODEPINK, “it is essential that in 2026 we work with all our strength to counteract the strangulation that the Trump administration is inflicting on the Cuban people.” Manolo De los Santos, executive director of The People’s Forum, stated that, in the face of the intensified aggression of the US in 2025, the solidarity movement with Cuba in this country faces a historic urgency. “But in this critical juncture, a powerful opportunity also arises: a new generation of young people, deeply dissatisfied with the Trump administration, is questioning the old dominant narratives.”
