Venezuela & ALBA News 12.29.2025: Venezuela Speech at UN Emergency Meeting; Washington’s Maritime Blockade of Venezuela; President Maduro Open Letter on US Aggression

Venezuela Ambassador to UN Samuel Moncada Speech to the United Nations Security Council Video of his speech at the UNSC emergency meeting condemning the US military blockade on Venezuela. The US used its veto power to block any action.

Code Pink (Michelle Elner): Trump Might Not Invade Venezuela Yet, but What He Is Doing Is Worse Trump probably won’t invade because he has found a strategy that is cheaper, less politically risky at home, and infinitely more devastating: economic warfare. Rather than launching a military invasion that would provoke public backlash and congressional scrutiny, Trump is doubling down on something more insidious: total economic asphyxiation. By tightening restrictions on Venezuelan oil exports, its primary source of revenue, Trump’s administration is deliberately pushing the country toward a full-scale humanitarian collapse.

By preventing Venezuela from exporting oil, which is the revenue that funds food imports, medicine, electricity, and public services, Washington is engineering conditions of mass deprivation. Under international humanitarian law, collective punishment is prohibited precisely because it targets civilians to achieve political ends. Polls consistently show that nearly 70 percent of people in the United States oppose a military intervention in Venezuela. War is recognized for what it is: violent, destructive, unacceptable. But sanctions are treated differently. Many people believe they are a harmless alternative, a way to apply “pressure” without bloodshed. That assumption is dangerously wrong.

Letter from Venezuelan President Maduro to the United Nations and the World on US aggression The letter to the Heads of State of the Latin American and Caribbean region, urges joint action against the aggressions, acts of piracy and extrajudicial killings perpetrated by the US. “If the unilateral use of force, the execution of civilians, piracy and the plunder of resources of sovereign States are tolerated, the world is heading towards a scenario of global confrontation of unpredictable proportions.” President Maduro makes a call to demand the immediate cessation of the military deployment, blockades and armed attacks. He also proposes activating the mechanisms of the multilateral system to investigate, sanction and prevent the recurrence of such acts. He further emphasizes the importance of defending the peace of Venezuela and the entire region, as well as safeguarding international law and the stability of the world and the global energy market.

United Nations Human Rights Commission: UN experts condemn United States blockade and aggression against Venezuela UN experts today denounced the partial maritime blockade imposed by the United States on Venezuela as violating fundamental rules of international law. “There is no right to enforce unilateral sanctions through an armed blockade. As such, it is an armed attack under article 51 of the Charter – in principle giving the victim State a right of self-defence… The illegal use of force, and threats to use further force at sea and on land, gravely endanger the human right to life and other rights in Venezuela and the region.”

The Cradle: When sanctions fail, power turns to seizure: The unraveling of the western coercive order For decades, the US treated sanctions as an economic weapon designed to force political compliance without military engagement. Years of financial isolation, asset freezes, and trade blockades were intended to destabilize and dismantle the Bolivarian state. Instead, the Venezuelan state adapted. Oil exports were rerouted to alternative markets, payment channels shifted away from US-dominated financial systems, and strategic partnerships with Russia, Iran, and China deepened. What was intended as economic suffocation became a catalyst for diversification and geopolitical realignment beyond Washington’s reach. Asset seizures, secondary sanctions, and public legal measures are often presented as enforcement, but they signal diminishing leverage rather than strategic confidence. Washington is operating in an international environment where escalation carries higher systemic risk and with fewer mechanisms guaranteed to maintain influence.

New Survey Shows the Venezuelan People Reject Regime Change Overwhelmingly 97% of Venezuelans reject Trump’s claim that their oil belongs to the US. 92% reject the US naval blockade, and 90% oppose US intervention.

National Single Payer Condemns Acts of US Foreign Aggression National Single Payer, a national, grassroots organization that believes health care is a human right, must be free from profit, and will be achieved through national legislation, opposes the use of tax-payer dollars to fund a military campaign targeting Venezuela and firmly stands against all unilateral coercive measures that cause hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths, mostly children’s, every year in 40 countries. We call on the nation to demand our government use our resources to support life and wellbeing at home and abroad.

Communist Party of Cuba: “Give me Venezuela to serve: it has in me a son” The Communist Party of Cuba reiterates its unwavering support and solidarity with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), its national leadership and membership, as well as with the popular, military, and police alliance led by President Nicolás Maduro.  We call on left-wing and progressive parties, social movements, and political forces to mobilize and unite our voices in denouncing and demanding an end to the escalation of aggression by the U.S. government against Venezuela.

Liberation News: Who stands to benefit from a US war on Venezuela? The corporate media and establishment politicians want us to think that a war on Venezuela is in our interests — a necessary conflict for the safety of the American people and democracy itself. This is an outrageous lie. If Trump’s war drive reaches its conclusion in all-out conflict, huge numbers of people in Venezuela and the US will suffer greatly. But who stands to benefit? Big oil corporations. Weapons manufacturers. Maria Corina Machado and the ousted Venezuelan ruling class. Not the U.S. working class. Not the Venezuelan people. Not the planet.

Maduro highlights ECLAC report that positions Venezuela as an engine of regional growth In the most recent report from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC ), Venezuela is identified as one of the main drivers of economic growth in the region. It estimates Venezuelan economic growth will exceed 6%, although Maduro stated the expansion of closer to 9% of the Gross Domestic Product. The president emphasized that Venezuela is the only country in Latin America where trade has grown by 34% during the last year, which he attributed to the strengthening of national productive forces and the boost to the domestic market. The country currently has strategic food reserves for four months, unprecedented in the nation’s history, given that the products are of Venezuelan origin.
